Sound In Space Book Illustrations
Vibrations travel through plasma, gas and dust and the waves can be detected and listened to. And this is the story of a little girl who won’t or can’t speak; thrhough her love of space she finds her voice in the universe. Befriended by moon they go on a journey and discover some of the sounds in space and how much fun making sounds and noise can be.
The illustrations express sound through colour – the beginning monochrome pages are quiet and dark and the book builds like a crescendo to s full colour orchestral extravaganza and stellar performance of the cosmic chorus. The little girl finds she’s not alone in the universe.
The story and its illustrations developed through research in to the theories of frequencies and the phenomena of recording sound in space. After reading about the topic, watching a Ted talk or two and listening to NASA recordings I used Mind-mapping tools to generate ideas about linking our human desires with our insatiable appetite for learning about outer space. And this isn’t just a story about a little girl but also about all our sadness-es and fears and the possibility that mankind is alone in the universe
